12 Common Mistakes That Cost Points in the Civil Service Exam

The preparation, reading, calculation and exam-day mistakes that most often cost reviewees points in the CSE, and a practical fix for each one.

The passing rating for the Civil Service Exam is 80.00, so a handful of avoidable mistakes can decide the result. Most lost points do not come from questions that were truly too hard. They come from the same small set of habits, during preparation and on the day itself. Here are twelve of the most common, with a fix for each.

Mistakes in preparation

1. Studying only by rereading

Rereading notes feels productive but builds weak memory. Fix: test yourself. Close the notes and recall, then check. Our guide on active recall and spaced practice explains how.

2. Ignoring the Filipino part of Verbal Ability

The CSC states that Verbal Ability is given in English and Filipino. Many reviewees prepare only in English and lose easy points. Fix: give Filipino grammar, vocabulary and reading regular time in your plan.

3. Skipping weak areas

It is tempting to practise what you already do well. Fix: use a diagnostic quiz or mock to find your weakest area, and give it the first study block of each day.

4. Relying on a calculator while studying

Calculators are not allowed in the exam. Fix: do all numerical practice on paper and learn mental shortcuts such as finding 10% first. See mental math without a calculator.

5. Trusting unofficial exam information

Social media posts often give wrong dates, fees or rules. Fix: take exam facts only from the CSC website and its official announcements, and check them again before applying.

Mistakes while answering

6. Missing small words in the question

“NOT”, “EXCEPT”, “most likely”, “immediately” and “directly” change the answer. Fix: underline or mentally stress these words before reading the options.

7. Choosing the first option that looks right

In vocabulary and grammar items, two options may both seem acceptable. Fix: read all four options before choosing, and pick the best one, not the first possible one.

8. Using the wrong base for percentage change

Dividing by the new value instead of the old one is one of the most common numerical errors. Fix: remember “change ÷ original”. A price that falls from ₱250 to ₱200 drops by 20%, not 25%.

9. Answering from opinion in reading passages

Reading questions ask what the passage says or implies, not what you believe. Fix: for each answer, point to the sentence that supports it.

10. Choosing the “kind” answer in ethics situations

In questions on office situations, the friendly option (“serve your friend first just this once”) is often the wrong one. Fix: apply the rule: impartial service, no gifts, disclose conflicts, report through proper channels. Our guide on ethics situation questions shows the method.

Mistakes on exam day

11. Spending too long on one item

One stubborn puzzle can cost the time for five easier items. Fix: set a personal limit, mark the item, move on and return if time allows. See time management during the CSE.

12. Shading errors and blank items

Shading the wrong row after skipping an item can shift a whole block of answers. Fix: when you skip an item, skip its row too, and check the item number every few questions. Before time ends, make sure no item you meant to answer is blank.

Two administrative mistakes to avoid

These are not about scoring, but they can stop you from taking the exam at all:

Turn mistakes into a checklist

Pick the three mistakes from this list that you make most often, write them on a card, and read the card before each practice session and mock exam. Then check your progress with our mixed numerical review, prepositions and articles and ethics in public service situations sets.
