Fractions, Decimals and Percentages MCQs

Civil Service Exam numerical ability reviewer on converting and computing with fractions, decimals and percentages, percentage change and successive percentages, solved without a calculator.

19 MCQsUpdated 3 November 2026

Fractions, decimals and percentages appear throughout the Numerical Ability part of the Civil Service Exam, both as basic operations and inside word problems. This set practises converting between the three forms, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing them, comparing and ordering values, finding a percentage of a number, and successive percentage changes.

Learn the common equivalents by heart, such as 1/8 = 0.125 = 12.5% and 3/4 = 0.75 = 75%, since calculators are not allowed. Every answer was calculated and checked by script.

    Express 3/8 as a decimal.

    Correct answer: A. 0.375

    3/8 = 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375. Knowing that 1/8 = 0.125 helps: three eighths is 3 × 0.125 = 0.375. Memorising the eighths (0.125, 0.25, 0.375, 0.5 and so on) saves time in the exam.

Express 0.45 as a fraction in lowest terms.

    Correct answer: C. 9/20

0.45 = 45/100. Dividing the numerator and denominator by their GCF, 5, gives 9/20. Always reduce fractions to lowest terms in the exam.

    Express 5/4 as a percentage.

    Correct answer: C. 125%

    5/4 = 1.25, and 1.25 × 100 = 125%. A fraction greater than 1 is always more than 100%. Similarly, 3/2 = 150% and 2 = 200%.

    What is 1/4 + 2/3?

    Correct answer: D. 11/12

    Use the LCD 12: 1/4 = 3/12 and 2/3 = 8/12. So 3/12 + 8/12 = 11/12. Adding tops and bottoms directly (3/7) is a common error.

  5. 5

    What is 5/6 − 3/4?

    Correct answer: D. 1/12

    With the LCD 12: 5/6 = 10/12 and 3/4 = 9/12, so 10/12 − 9/12 = 1/12. Always rewrite both fractions with the least common denominator before subtracting.

  6. 6

    What is 3/5 ÷ 9/10?

    Correct answer: A. 2/3

    Dividing by a fraction means multiplying by its reciprocal: 3/5 × 10/9 = 30/45 = 2/3. Cancelling first (3 with 9, 10 with 5) makes it quicker.

    What is 2.4 ÷ 0.06?

    Correct answer: D. 40

Move the decimal point two places to the right in both numbers: 2.4 ÷ 0.06 = 240 ÷ 6 = 40. Check: 0.06 × 40 = 2.4. Making the divisor a whole number first is the standard way to divide decimals by hand.

  8. 8

    What is 0.25 × 0.8?

    Correct answer: A. 0.2

    Multiply 25 × 8 = 200, then count three decimal places (two in 0.25 and one in 0.8): 0.200 = 0.2. Or think of 0.25 as one quarter: a quarter of 0.8 is 0.2.

    What is 12.5% of 960?

    Correct answer: A. 120

    12.5% equals 1/8, so 12.5% of 960 = 960 ÷ 8 = 120. Knowing common fraction equivalents (12.5% = 1/8, 25% = 1/4, 33⅓% = 1/3) speeds up these items.

24% of a number is 72. What is the number?

    Correct answer: D. 300

    If 24% is 72, then 1% is 72 ÷ 24 = 3, and 100% is 300. Check: 24% of 300 = 72. This "find the whole" pattern appears often in word problems.

A number increased from 30 to 36. What is the percentage increase?

    Correct answer: A. 20%

    Increase = 6. Percentage increase = 6 ÷ 30 × 100 = 20%, based on the original value 30. Dividing by 36 instead gives the wrong answer of about 16.7%.

A price of ₱800 is increased by 10% and then the new price is decreased by 10%. What is the final price?

    Correct answer: A. ₱792.0000000000001

    After a 10% increase: ₱800 × 1.10 = ₱880. After a 10% decrease: ₱880 × 0.90 = ₱792. The final price is ₱8 lower, not back to ₱800, because the second 10% is taken from a bigger amount.

    Which is the smallest?

    Correct answer: A. 5/8

Convert all to decimals: 2/3 ≈ 0.667, 0.65, 5/8 = 0.625 and 64% = 0.64. The smallest is 0.625, which is 5/8. Converting everything to the same form is the safest way to compare mixed values.

Arrange from least to greatest: 0.3, 2/5, 35%

    Correct answer: B. 0.3, 35%, 2/5

    As decimals: 0.3, 2/5 = 0.4 and 35% = 0.35. From least to greatest: 0.3, 0.35, 0.4, that is 0.3, 35%, 2/5. A common slip is treating 35% as larger than 2/5 because 35 looks bigger than 2 or 5.

A team finished 3/4 of a 2,400-page encoding job. How many pages are done?

    Correct answer: D. 1,800

    3/4 of 2,400 = 2,400 ÷ 4 × 3 = 600 × 3 = 1,800 pages, leaving 600 pages still to encode. Dividing by the denominator first keeps the numbers small.

    What is 2.5 × 3.2?

    Correct answer: A. 8

    Multiply 25 × 32 = 800, then place two decimal places: 8.00 = 8. A shortcut: 2.5 × 3.2 = 2.5 × 4 × 0.8 = 10 × 0.8 = 8. Look for factors that make 10 or 100 to simplify decimal multiplication.

Of an office's budget, 35% goes to salaries and 40% to supplies. What percentage is left?

    Correct answer: D. 25%

Add the parts first: 35% + 40% = 75%. The remainder is 100% − 75% = 25%. The whole budget always equals 100%. The same idea solves budget questions in the data interpretation part of the exam.

What percentage of 1 hour is 45 minutes?

    Correct answer: A. 75%

45 minutes out of 60 = 45/60 = 3/4 = 75%. Convert both to the same unit (minutes) before dividing. Similarly, 30 minutes is 50% and 15 minutes is 25% of an hour.

If 60% of the employees are women and half of the women attended a seminar, what percentage of all employees are women who attended?

    Correct answer: D. 30%

Half of 60% is 30%, because 0.5 × 60% = 30%. A "percentage of a percentage" is found by multiplying the two rates. So in an office of 200 employees, 60 would be women who attended.
