Logic Puzzles and Arrangements MCQs

Civil Service Exam Professional reviewer on arrangement puzzles: seating at desks, offices on floors, schedules across days and rankings, each solved step by step from the given clues.

20 MCQsUpdated 3 November 2026

Arrangement puzzles test the same reasoning as "identifying assumptions and drawing conclusions" in the official Analytical Ability scope: you combine several clues to reach the only possible answer. This set has four original puzzles (desks in a row, offices on floors, trainings across days and a ranking of scores), each followed by several questions.

Start with the most definite clue, such as a fixed position, then test the clues that link two people. Draw a simple row or table and rule out impossible cases. Every puzzle here was checked by a script that tried every possible arrangement and confirmed there is exactly one solution.

Puzzle: Five clerks (Ana, Ben, Cara, Dan and Eli) sit at desks numbered 1 to 5 from left to right. Cara sits at desk 3. Eli sits immediately to the left of Ana. Ben sits somewhere to the left of Dan. Dan does not sit at desk 5. Who sits at desk 1?

    Correct answer: C. Ben

If Eli and Ana were at desks 1 and 2, Ben and Dan would take desks 4 and 5, forcing Dan to desk 5, which is not allowed. So Eli and Ana are at 4 and 5, and Ben and Dan at 1 and 2. The only arrangement is: desk 1 Ben, desk 2 Dan, desk 3 Cara, desk 4 Eli, desk 5 Ana.

Who sits at desk 5?

    Correct answer: A. Ana

The only arrangement is: desk 1 Ben, desk 2 Dan, desk 3 Cara, desk 4 Eli, desk 5 Ana. Ana is at desk 5 because Eli must be immediately to her left and the pair cannot be at desks 1 and 2.

Who sits immediately to the right of Cara?

    Correct answer: A. Eli

The only arrangement is: desk 1 Ben, desk 2 Dan, desk 3 Cara, desk 4 Eli, desk 5 Ana. Cara is at desk 3, so the person at desk 4, Eli, is immediately to her right.

How many clerks sit between Dan and Ana?

    Correct answer: B. 2

The only arrangement is: desk 1 Ben, desk 2 Dan, desk 3 Cara, desk 4 Eli, desk 5 Ana. Dan is at desk 2 and Ana at desk 5, so the clerks between them are at desks 3 and 4: Cara and Eli, which makes 2.

    Correct answer: C. Cara

The only arrangement is: desk 1 Ben, desk 2 Dan, desk 3 Cara, desk 4 Eli, desk 5 Ana. Cara at desk 3 is next to Dan at desk 2 and Eli at desk 4, so she is the only one next to both.

Puzzle: Four offices (Records, Cashier, HR and Legal) occupy floors 1 to 4 of a building, one office per floor, with floor 1 at the bottom. HR is directly above Records. Legal is not on floor 1 or floor 4. The Cashier is on a higher floor than Legal. Which office is on floor 4?

    Correct answer: A. Cashier

If Legal were on floor 2, the remaining floors 1, 3 and 4 could not hold Records and HR one above the other while keeping the Cashier above Legal. So Legal is on floor 3, the Cashier on 4, and Records and HR on 1 and 2. The only arrangement is: floor 1 Records, floor 2 HR, floor 3 Legal, floor 4 Cashier.

    Correct answer: B. Records

If Legal were on floor 2, the remaining floors 1, 3 and 4 could not hold Records and HR one above the other while keeping the Cashier above Legal.
