Coding-Decoding and Symbolic Reasoning MCQs

Civil Service Exam Professional reviewer on symbolic logic and abstract reasoning: letter shift and reverse codes, number codes, symbol substitution, coded relationships and pattern rules.

20 MCQsUpdated 3 November 2026

Symbolic logic and abstract reasoning are part of the official Analytical Ability scope of the Civil Service Exam Professional level. This set practises the most common forms: letter-shift and reverse-alphabet codes, number codes, words written backwards, symbol substitution in arithmetic, coded relationships, positions in the alphabet and pattern rules.

Find the rule from the example before touching the question: compare the first letter of the word with the first letter of the code and count the shift, then check it on every letter. Every answer here was checked by script.

If CAT is written as DBU in a certain code, how is DOG written in that code?

    Correct answer: D. EPH

Each letter is moved one place forward in the alphabet: C→D, A→B, T→U. Applying the same rule to DOG gives D→E, O→P, G→H, so DOG becomes EPH.

If each letter of a word is replaced by the letter just before it in the alphabet, how is FILE written?

    Correct answer: A. EHKD

Moving each letter one place back gives F→E, I→H, L→K, E→D, so FILE becomes EHKD. GJMF would be the result of moving each letter one place forward instead.

In a code, each letter is replaced by its "opposite" letter in the alphabet (A↔Z, B↔Y, C↔X, and so on). How is LAW written?

    Correct answer: C. OZD

    Opposite letters add up to 27 in position: L (12) ↔ O (15), A (1) ↔ Z (26), W (23) ↔ D (4). So LAW becomes OZD. Remembering that A↔Z, M↔N helps you find any opposite quickly.

If BAD is coded as 2-1-4 using the positions of letters in the alphabet, how is CAB coded?

    Correct answer: A. 3-1-2

Each letter is replaced by its position: C = 3, A = 1, B = 2, so CAB is 3-1-2. The order of the numbers must follow the order of the letters in the word.

    If ACE = 9 because A + C + E = 1 + 3 + 5, what is the value of BIG?

    Correct answer: C. 18

    Using letter positions, B = 2, I = 9 and G = 7, so BIG = 2 + 9 + 7 = 18. Knowing that E = 5, J = 10, O = 15 and T = 20 helps you find other positions quickly.

If WORD is written as DROW in a code, how is FORM written?

    Correct answer: C. MROF

The code simply writes the word backwards: WORD → DROW. Reversing FORM gives M-R-O-F, so the answer is MROF. Before looking for a letter shift, always check whether the code is simply the word reversed.

If BOOK is written as DQQM in a code, how is PEN written?

    Correct answer: C. RGP

Each letter moves two places forward: B→D, O→Q, K→M. Applying +2 to PEN gives P→R, E→G, N→P, so PEN becomes RGP. Check the rule on every letter: the two O's both become Q, which confirms a constant shift.

If PAPER is coded as QBQFS, what word is coded as TBMBSZ?

    Correct answer: B. SALARY

The code moves each letter one place forward (P→Q, A→B, E→F, R→S). To decode, move each letter one place back: T→S, B→A, M→L, B→A, S→R, Z→Y, giving SALARY.

    If A = 1, B = 2, C = 3 and so on, what word does 19-21-14 represent?

    Correct answer: C. SUN

Convert each number to its letter: 19 = S, 21 = U and 14 = N, so the word is SUN. Counting from known anchors such as T = 20 makes the conversion faster.

    If @ means +, # means × and % means −, what is 8 # 3 @ 6 % 4, following the usual order of operations?

    Correct answer: B. 26

Replace the symbols: 8 × 3 + 6 − 4. Multiply first: 24, then add and subtract from left to right: 24 + 6 − 4 = 26. Forgetting the order of operations and working left to right would also give 26 here, but not in general, so always apply it.

    If × means ÷, ÷ means +, + means − and − means ×, what is 24 × 4 ÷ 3 − 2 + 5?

    Correct answer: B. 7

    Replace each symbol: 24 ÷ 4 + 3 × 2 − 5. Division and multiplication first: 6 + 6 − 5 = 7. Writing the new expression in full before calculating prevents mistakes.

Which letter is fifth to the right of the tenth letter of the English alphabet?

    Correct answer: A. O

The tenth letter is J. Counting five places to the right gives K, L, M, N, O, so the answer is O, the fifteenth letter. "To the right" means towards Z; "to the left" would mean counting back towards A.

Which letter is exactly midway between C and K in the alphabet?

    Correct answer: B. G

    C is the 3rd letter and K is the 11th. The midpoint is (3 + 11) ÷ 2 = 7, and the 7th letter is G. Check: G is four letters after C and four letters before K.

Which is the fourth letter from the right end of the alphabet?

    Correct answer: D. W

    Counting from Z backwards: Z (1st), Y (2nd), X (3rd), W (4th). So the answer is W. D is the fourth letter from the left end.

If ROAD is coded as URDG, how is CITY coded?

    Correct answer: D. FLWB

    Each letter moves three places forward: R→U, O→R, A→D, D→G. For CITY: C→F, I→L, T→W and Y→B (counting past Z back to A, B), giving FLWB.

In a code, each letter is replaced by the letter after it. Which word is written as IBQQZ?

    Correct answer: B. HAPPY

If the code uses the next letter, decoding means moving each letter one place back: I→H, B→A, Q→P, Q→P, Z→Y. The word is HAPPY.

    If "A © B" means "A is the brother of B" and "A ★ B" means "A is the mother of B", what does "X ★ Y © Z" mean?

Correct answer: B. X is the mother of Z

    X ★ Y means X is the mother of Y, and Y © Z means Y is the brother of Z. Since Y and Z are siblings, X is also the mother of Z.

    In a certain rule, 3 → 10 and 5 → 26. Using the same rule, 7 → ?

    Correct answer: C. 50

    The rule is n² + 1: 3² + 1 = 10 and 5² + 1 = 26. So 7 → 7² + 1 = 50. Always test a rule on every given pair before applying it.

    If a ⊕ b means a² + b², so that 2 ⊕ 3 = 13, what is 3 ⊕ 5?

    Correct answer: C. 34

    Apply the definition: 3 ⊕ 5 = 3² + 5² = 9 + 25 = 34. Note that 64 would be (3 + 5)², a different operation. Check the definition on the example first: 2² + 3² = 4 + 9 = 13, as given.

Which letter group is the odd one out: ACE, BDF, GIK, MOP?

    Correct answer: D. MOP

In ACE, BDF and GIK, each letter skips one letter (A_C_E, B_D_F, G_I_K). In MOP, O and P are next to each other, so MOP breaks the pattern. Following the rule it would be MOQ.
